What is Mammogram

A mammogram is a special X-ray designed to examine breast tissue for abnormalities. It's a crucial tool for early detection of breast cancer.
Here's a breakdown of a mammogram:

Process:

01

A technologist positions each breast on a special platform during a mammogram and compresses it briefly between two paddles. This compression helps spread out the breast tissue and create a clearer image

02

While it might feel uncomfortable, the compression is necessary to get a good picture.

03

Multiple X-ray images are taken of each breast from different angles.

Purpose:

Mammograms can detect abnormalities like lumps, masses, calcifications (tiny calcium deposits), and changes in breast tissue density.

Early detection of these abnormalities allows for prompt diagnosis and treatment, significantly improving the chances of successful outcomes.

Types of Mammograms:

Screening Mammogram:

This is a routine X-ray used for women with no signs or symptoms of breast cancer. It’s typically recommended for women starting at a certain age (often 40 or 50) and repeated at regular intervals.

Diagnostic Mammogram:

This type is performed if a screening mammogram reveals an abnormality or if a woman experiences breast symptoms like a lump, nipple discharge, or changes in skin texture. A closer look may involve additional X-ray images from different angles or magnification views.

Limitations:

Mammography could be better. Dense breast tissue can sometimes make it difficult to detect abnormalities.

False positives (an abnormal finding that turns out to be benign) and false negatives (a missed cancer) can also occur.

Overall:

Despite limitations, mammograms remain the most effective early breast cancer detection tool. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns about mammograms. They can advise you on the best screening schedule based on your risk factors and family history.

What is a Mammogram?

A mammogram is a specialized X-ray that examines breast tissue for abnormalities. It’s a crucial tool for early detection of breast cancer, the most common cancer affecting women in the United States. Early detection is key, as it significantly increases the chances of successful treatment.

Why Free Screenings?

Every woman deserves the opportunity to prioritize her health. Financial barriers should allow everyone to access this potentially life-saving screening. Our free mammogram program aims to:

  • Increase access: By removing the cost barrier, we empower women to take charge of their breast health, regardless of their financial situation.
  • Promote early detection: Early detection allows for less invasive treatment options and significantly improves the chances of a full recovery.
  • Reduce disparities: Sadly, breast cancer rates and mortality are higher among underserved communities. Free screenings help bridge this gap and ensure equitable access to preventive care.
